Today in class we:
1.  Completed the following writing assignment:  In your opinion, what are the top two problems with the current presidential nomination process?  Why are these problems?  How would you reform the presidential nomination process?  Why is this reform idea a good idea?

2.  Discussed the problems of the presidential nomination process AND discussed ideas for changing it.

3.  Took notes on voting.

4.  Identified reasons people choose to vote, reasons people choose not to vote, and characteristics of regular voters and non-voters.

Today in class we discussed why the US has a two party system.  We also took notes on the functions of political parties, including the nomination function.

HW:  Read pages 466-470.  Identify the criticisms of the presidential nomination process AND ideas for reforming the process.  Record your information on the paper provided.  Due tomorrow.

Today in class we reviewed for Monday's test, completed an individual assignment comparing the three branches, and wrote an essay.  The essay assignment is below.
Remember to study for Monday's test.


Three Branches of Government Essay Assignment
(20 points)

Directions:
  1. Answer the following question completely, using essay form.
  2. Do your own work.  Any evidence of cheating will result in failure.
  3. Be sure to illustrate your essay with specific examples.
  4. This essay will be counted as a test grade.
  5. Your essay should be approximately ¾ of a page in length.
Question:
          The founders of the United States Constitution wanted to make sure that no one leader ever had too much power.  So they created a government with three branches and gave each branch the ability to check the other two branches.  Write an essay explaining this Constitutional arrangement of separation of powers and checks and balances.  At minimum, your essay needs to contain the following:
a.     A description of the function of each branch of government
b.     A description of how each branch can check the power of the other two branches.
